Anyone over the age of 18 can drive in Australia and can do so for up to six months on the license from their home country. If you wish to drive for longer than this period then you should have an international driving license or apply for an Australian license.

Used vehicles need a certificate of roadworthiness before they can be sold – It’s not recommended to buy a vehicle without one as you’ll need to show this when you transfer the registration. You will also need to get a certificate of roadworthiness before you sell the vehicle at the end of your trip. Many mechanics can assess your vehicle and issue the certificate, for recommended mechanics please see our mechanics section.

To transfer your vehicle registration you will need to supply the roadworthy certificate, your passport and drivers license to the local department of transport. The fee you will pay is calculated according to the value of the vehicle.

If the vehicle registration is due, or if you are buying a vehicle in a different state to which it is registered an additional fee will also need to be paid.
